Volkswagen presents its first fully electric camper van

Volkswagen has presented the ID. California Cruise at Caravan Salon 2026, currently taking place in Düsseldorf. It is the first camper van in the California family with a fully electric powertrain. First deliveries are expected in early 2027, while the German manufacturer has announced additional electric models for 2028.

The ID. California Cruise can be used for everyday driving, as well as weekend trips, longer road trips and overnight stays. The cabin can be converted into a sleeping area for two people measuring 2.03 by 1.20 metres, with a foldable nine-centimetre-thick mattress. The equipment also includes two camping chairs and a table, while the windows can be fitted with blackout coverings. The model will be available with both short and long wheelbases, while the starting price in Germany is around €60,761.

One of the key elements of its electrification is the ability to use the vehicle’s battery to power other devices. Through the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) system, the vehicle can continuously supply up to 2 kW, or up to 3.6 kW for short periods. This can be used to power a coffee machine, electric kettle, cool box and lighting, as well as charge electric bicycles, scooters and other equipment.

The dedicated California Mode allows users to control the lighting and certain comfort functions while staying overnight in the vehicle. The climate control system can maintain a comfortable cabin temperature for up to 48 hours, depending on the battery charge level and outside temperature.

The electric system is also integrated into trip planning. The California app provides information on charging stations along the route, while the Plug & Charge function at compatible charging stations enables the vehicle to be automatically recognised and charging to begin without additional authorisation.

The ID. California Cruise marks the first step in electrifying the California family. The first model in the family was introduced in 1988, and the range has since been expanded with various models.
