An intraday electricity market officially began operating in Skopje on May 6. The national electricity market operator, MEMO DOOEL Skopje, introduced this new trading segment, which allows the purchase and sale of electricity on the same day as delivery. This brings greater system flexibility, more efficient balancing, and reduced imbalance costs.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated that the launch of the intraday market proves the country is progressing through concrete energy sector reforms.
“In a time when energy is one of the most important issues for any country, our duty is to create a system that is secure, competitive, and resilient to global challenges. With this platform, we gain greater flexibility in managing the power system, better balancing, and more efficient real-time energy use,” Mickoski said.
Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Božinovska emphasised that this is only the beginning of the process of full integration into the European energy market.

“We will continue to develop market mechanisms, strengthen regional cooperation, and connect to European market coupling processes,” Božinovska stressed.
MEMO General Director Zoran Đorđijevski assessed that the intraday market brings “ultimate precision” to North Macedonia’s energy sector.
“As of today, our market not only plans for tomorrow — it also functions in real time. A clear price signal is the foundation of an efficient system, enabling better resource allocation, risk management, and rational investments, especially in renewable energy sources,” Đorđijevski said.
He also warned of challenges posed by new European mechanisms such as the CBAM, which could further burden domestic producers and affect market liquidity.
Energy Community representative Martin Martinovski assessed that the intraday market will position North Macedonia as a reliable partner in the regional power system.
