Kozloduy NPP Increases Unit 5 Output Following Rise in Danube Water Levels

Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant has begun gradually increasing the output of Unit 5 after water levels in the Danube rose over the previous several days.

According to the plant, the planned increase in output began on 31 August at 10:00 a.m., and by 5:00 p.m. Unit 5 had reached an output of 950 MW. The decision to return the unit to normal operating conditions was made following an improvement in hydrological conditions on the Danube.

The plant remains in constant communication with Bulgaria’s Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River, from which it receives information on changes in water levels.

At the same time, procedures intended for prolonged periods of low water levels remain in place. The hydrotechnical facilities of the technical water supply system are being continuously monitored, while measures are being implemented to maintain their maximum efficiency.

More:

Unit 5 previously reduced its output by around 120 MW as a precautionary measure on 21 August due to record-low water levels. At the time, the plant said that such a measure, prompted by extreme meteorological and hydrological conditions, had been implemented for the first time in Kozloduy NPP’s 52 years of operation.

Meanwhile, as we previously reported, the unfavourable hydrological situation on the Danube has also affected decisions in Romania’s energy sector. The Romanian government decided to extend the operation of certain lignite-fired generation capacities at Craiova and Turceni, partly due to the severe hydrological deficit on the Danube, expected higher electricity consumption and the possibility of reduced generation from renewable energy sources. Craiova 1 and Craiova 2 are expected to remain in operation until the end of the second quarter of 2027, while Unit 5 of the Turceni thermal power plant is scheduled to operate until the end of the first quarter of 2028.
