Bulgaria Allocates €170 Million to Reduce Electricity Costs for Industry

Bulgaria has allocated €170 million to support energy-intensive companies in covering their electricity costs for the period from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. The compensation may cover part of electricity costs, but the price companies pay after receiving state support cannot fall below €50 per megawatt-hour.
This is the second pricing period under a support scheme adopted by the Bulgarian government in 2025. A new decision has established the estimated budget for the period and lowered the threshold price used to calculate the aid. The scheme is intended for energy-intensive consumers in sectors particularly exposed to the risk of losing competitiveness due to volatile electricity prices.

The government says the support is important given the continued volatility of energy prices in Southeast Europe, particularly as the companies covered by the scheme are largely export-oriented. The funds will be provided from revenues of Bulgaria’s Electricity System Security Fund.
The compensation may cover up to 50 percent of the price of electricity consumed in activities that meet the requirements of the scheme. The support is also linked to investment, as companies will be required to invest at least half of the amount received in decarbonization measures.
