Končar – Institute of Electrical Engineering, part of Croatia’s Končar Group, has opened the Large Electrical Drives and Machines Laboratory (LAVESP 2) in Bedekovčina. The facility is one of the largest and best-equipped laboratories of its kind in Europe, designed for testing advanced high-voltage equipment for the power sector.
Covering 2,700 square metres, the new laboratory will carry out type, development and research testing of high-voltage equipment, with a particular focus on HVDC (high-voltage direct current) systems used for long-distance electricity transmission.
With the opening of LAVESP 2, Končar has expanded its research and development capacities following the launch of its first Large Electrical Drives and Machines Laboratory in Zagreb in early 2023. The company has also announced plans to build another laboratory, which will further increase its testing capacity.
Croatian Minister of Economy Ante Šušnjar said the new laboratory will test electrical assemblies and cables for manufacturers from different countries, meaning that most of its activities will be export-oriented and focused on international markets.
The construction and equipment of the laboratory were financed with the support of the Croatian Bank for Reconstruction and Development (HBOR) and the European Union through the NextGenerationEU programme.
