Croatia to Get Six New Battery-Electric Trains

Croatia has signed contracts worth 53.6 million euros for the procurement of six battery-electric trains and the construction of a hybrid charging station, as part of continued investments in the decarbonisation and modernisation of railway transport. The project is financed through the EU Modernisation Fund, which supports investments aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The new trains will be manufactured by Croatian company Končar and will be operated by the national railway operator HŽ Passenger Transport. The battery-electric trains will be able to operate on both electrified and non-electrified railway lines, enabling direct journeys without transfers on certain routes.

The President of the Management Board of HŽ Passenger Transport, Željko Ukić, said that the new trains would improve passenger transport in northern Croatia, while the hybrid charging station will be built in Kotoriba.

Croatia’s Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition has announced the procurement of an additional 30 battery-electric trains and the construction of three more charging stations as part of the Social Climate Plan. The Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure said that more than 1.5 billion euros is currently being invested in the renovation and construction of railway infrastructure.
