Đedović Handanović: Goal is for Gas Power Plant near Niš to be Completed by 2030

The Minister of Mining and Energy of the Republic of Serbia, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, spoke with representatives of “Elektromreža Srbije” (EMS), “Elektroprivreda Srbije” (EPS), “Srbijagas,” and the City of Niš about the next steps in implementing the project to build a gas power plant near Niš, the Ministry of Mining and Energy announced.

The Minister emphasized that the gas power plant near Niš is a project of strategic importance and that the goal is for the new 500 MW facility, which will produce electricity and heat, to be completed by 2030.

– This will also be the first joint project of EPS, Srbijagas, and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR, and for Serbia it will mean additional energy security for supplying citizens, and especially for the development of industry in southern Serbia – said Đedović Handanović.

As she pointed out, work on the project has intensified in the previous period – a steering committee, a project management team, and five technical teams for each work area have been formed, and coordination among all project participants has been launched.

– Alignment of the Preliminary Feasibility Study with SOCAR is underway, and we expect it to be finalized soon, after harmonization with the Azerbaijani side. The most important task at this moment is finalizing the shareholders’ agreement between EPS, Srbijagas, and SOCAR, which will enable the establishment of a joint venture, define the commercial aspects of the project, and set out the responsibilities of the project-carrying companies – the Minister stated.

The meeting also addressed the next steps in project implementation, the preparation of detailed regulation plans, the selection of investors for all infrastructure facilities, and the connection of the new power plant to the transmission grid.

The meeting was attended by, among others, EMS General Director Jelena Matejić, EPS General Director Dušan Živković, Srbijagas General Director Dušan Bajatović, and Niš Mayor Dragoslav Pavlović.
