Russia Plans Around 30 GW of New Nuclear Capacity

Russia plans to significantly expand its nuclear power capacity in the coming years by constructing new large, medium and small nuclear power plants, while further expanding Rosatom’s projects on international markets.

According to World Nuclear News, the Russian president said at a meeting focused on the development of nuclear energy that around 30 GW of additional nuclear capacity is planned, including small nuclear power plants. Some of the new units are expected to replace existing facilities reaching the end of their operational lifetimes, while also increasing the country’s overall nuclear generating capacity.

The construction of nuclear power plants is also planned at new locations, with additional capacity expected to be developed in the Urals, Siberia and the Russian Far East.

According to Rosatom’s long-term plans, 38 new nuclear units with a combined capacity of around 29.3 GW are expected to be built by 2042, while the share of nuclear power in Russia’s electricity generation is projected to reach 25 per cent by 2045.

Rosatom’s CEO said that 18 power units are currently under construction in Russia, including small and floating nuclear power plants. At the same time, the company continues to expand its international presence. According to figures presented at the meeting, Rosatom is currently building 28 units in nine countries, while agreements have been signed for another 17 units in six countries. Negotiations are underway with a further 15 countries.

Russia currently has nearly 30 GW of nuclear capacity, meaning that the planned construction programme of almost 30 GW of new units is roughly equivalent in scale to the country’s entire existing nuclear fleet. However, this does not mean that total capacity will double, as some of the new facilities will replace older reactors that are scheduled to be retired in the coming years.
