Work Begins on Upgrading Bajina Bašta Substation to 400 kV

As part of the Third Section of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Transmission Corridor, one of the most significant electricity infrastructure projects in Serbia and the region, work has begun on the reconstruction and expansion of the Bajina Bašta substation, which will raise the facility from the 220 kV to the 400 kV voltage level.

The project includes the construction of a new 400 kV switchyard, as well as the installation of two 400/220 kV power transformers, each with a rated capacity of 400 MVA. The works will contribute to increasing the capacity and reliability of the transmission network in western Serbia and create the conditions for connecting the future Bistrica pumped-storage hydropower plant, according to a statement from Elektromreža Srbije.

The Third Section of the Trans-Balkan Corridor also includes the construction of a new double-circuit 2×400 kV transmission line between Obrenovac and Bajina Bašta, the construction of which began in June last year, as well as the installation of equipment for two transmission line bays at the Obrenovac substation. The total value of the Third Section is EUR 113.5 million.

The works on the Third Section are scheduled to be completed in 2028. Once the entire Trans-Balkan Corridor project is completed, Serbia will have more than 320 kilometres of new 400 kV transmission lines, modernised substations and a stronger transmission network. The completion of works on the Fourth Section is planned for 2029, connecting Bajina Bašta with Višegrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Pljevlja in Montenegro.
