Bulgaria Among Regional Leaders in Battery Energy Storage: New System to Store 512.5 MWh of Electricity
Share

Bulgaria has positioned itself among the regional leaders in the development of battery energy storage (BESS) capacity. With capacity exceeding 6.2 GW / 19 GWh, according to the latest estimates, the development of this segment represents one of the country’s most significant achievements in its energy transition.
This is further demonstrated by a new battery energy storage project planned in south-eastern Bulgaria, which, once completed, will have a power capacity of 246 MW and an energy storage capacity of 512.5 MWh.
According to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), which has approved a €30 million loan to Tenevo Solar Technologies for the development of the project, the new BESS facility will be built at the site of an existing 242 MWp solar power plant.
The project will further enhance grid stability and support the integration of additional clean energy capacity into Bulgaria’s power system.
