Serbia–North Macedonia Gas Link: Macedonian Section Contracted

North Macedonia has signed a contract for the design and construction of the section of the gas interconnector with Serbia located on its territory. As previously reported, the project is expected to establish a new bidirectional gas connection between the two countries and provide Serbia with an additional supply route from Greece via North Macedonia.

The contract was signed by Nedim Rama, director of state-owned natural gas transmission system operator NOMAGAS, and Toni Karanfilovski, director of Rapid Build, which was selected as the contractor. According to information reported by local media from the signing event, the value of the selected bid amounts to EUR 29.4 million, while completion of the Macedonian section is planned for the fourth quarter of 2028.

The section through North Macedonia will be 22.4 kilometres long, running from the Klečovce area to the Serbian border near the village of Sopot. The pipeline will have a diameter of 500 millimetres and a technical capacity of up to 160,000 cubic metres of gas per hour, with bidirectional flow capability. The contract covers design, construction and the obtaining of the necessary permits for the use of the infrastructure.

The Serbia–North Macedonia gas interconnection project has been under development for several years. In October 2024, the two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the construction of the interconnector. At the time, Serbia’s Ministry of Mining and Energy said the new connection would provide Serbia with an additional gas supply route, contributing to the diversification of supply sources and greater security of supply.

By the end of 2025, the plans had been further developed. In December, Serbia’s Ministry of Mining and Energy said the investment in the approximately 144-kilometre Orljane–Leskovac–Vranje–state border route was estimated at around EUR 153 million.

Of the total length of that route on Serbian territory, approximately 47 kilometres will cover the section from Vranje to the border with North Macedonia. Together with the 22.4 kilometres of pipeline to be built on the Macedonian side, the direct connection between the gas systems of the two countries will be approximately 70 kilometres long. The remaining section of the route through Serbia will connect the interconnector to the existing gas transmission system near Orljane.

The new connection forms part of a broader planned gas corridor running from Greece through North Macedonia and Serbia towards Central Europe.
