The solar sector and battery storage industry in the European Union provided a total of 982,000 jobs in 2025, according to a new report by SolarPower Europe. Of these, the majority – 874,000 jobs – were in the solar sector. In addition, employment in the sector grew twice as fast as total employment across the European Union over the previous year.
At the same time, the European Union installed 69 GW of new solar capacity, exceeding earlier expectations.
This is the first time the report has included an estimate of employment in the battery storage sector, which is becoming increasingly significant given that its capacity has increased twelvefold over the past four years, reaching around 80 GWh in the European Union.
Although employment in the solar sector continues to grow, SolarPower Europe warns that current market trends could lead to a decline in employment by 2030.
Looking at individual jobs, around 85 percent of employment in the solar sector was related to activities involving the installation and deployment of solar systems.
Among EU member states, Germany was the largest solar employment market, with around 165,000 jobs, followed by Spain with approximately the same number. Italy ranked third, with around 85,000 jobs. Together, these three countries accounted for nearly half of employment in Europe’s solar sector. France, Romania and Poland were also among the largest markets.
